The "Budget Vegetarian"

In many family budgets, one of the biggest food expenses is often meat.  So in theory at least becoming a vegetarian should be an outstanding financial maneuver.  In theory, if all you ate was rice and vegetables, you should be able to live for very little.

But theory and reality are often far apart from each other.  Because the culture of vegetarian living has developed so many high quality foods to fill the gap left behind by a good steak or a plate of barbeque ribs, you can spend as much or more on your vegetarian lifestyle as you did when you were a meat eater.  The high cost of living as a vegetarian is not entire attributable to gourmet foods however.

The truth is if you are going to live in day in day out and month in month out on a vegetarian diet, not only do you need some high quality foods to substitute for taking a whole food group out of your diet, you need variety.  The quality is needed because its your health on the line if you don’t get the proper nutrients.   The diversity is needed because if you get bored with the vegetarian lifestyle, you may quit and give up.  And nobody wants that.

Another reason that the cost of vegetarian eating is often higher than a “normal” diet comes from the fact that vegetarians are still in the minority.  So prepared vegetarian foods and vegetarian only restaurants are rare.  And to be able to make a profit, these specialty stores must charge a lot because they are specialty stores.  Unfortunately, even though we see the vegetarian community as a supportive one, if you are going to be able to afford the vegetarian lifestyle, you are going to have to learn to cut costs.

Cutting costs means eliminating shopping at “boutique” vegetarian markets and no more eating out.  Or at least it means cutting down on the eating out significantly.  You can buy fresh vegetables and fruits at farmers markets or grocery stores that are just as valid as vegetarian options as any you get as a specialty store.  Using a good food processor and other means, you can chop, dice, boil and puree just about any kind of vegetarian meal that you might be able to imagine getting in a restaurant.  And at a much lower cost.  Not only that but the leftovers can go into a compost pile to make fertilizer for your garden when you can grow your own vegetables next spring.

That “grower to consumer” market that often surfaces as a farmer’s market is a great way to save lots of money also because you are buying your produce directly from the farmer and you cut the grocery store out of the loop entirely.  One way to make sure you capitalize on every opportunity to buy inexpensive produce is to work as a community.  Get about a dozen vegetarian families working together to always be on the lookout for a great buy.  One might find a small farmer’s market or roadside stand that is selling produce far below grocery store prices.  Another might find a farmer who will basically give his food away just to clear the field.  With some coordination, you could field an army of vegetarians to grab those bargains while they are fresh and stock everybody’s kitchen with low cost fresh produce.

These are just a few of many ways  you can find to save money on your vegetarian groceries and still have just as much quality but without as much cost.  By shopping smart and shopping for bargains, you can live the vegetarian life and feel good about it because you are not only healthy, you are smart.

Advantages of a hybrid car

The cost of fuel and the damage it brings to our environment has become very rampant, and because of that, hybrid cars are presently considered as very beneficial to the preservation of the environment. The reason behind this is that hybrid cars do not depend mainly on fuel for it to have power, but it also makes use of electricity that results to a smaller amount of fuel consumption and less emitted air pollution.

A hybrid car combines an electric motor and gasoline engine to provide sufficient power to the vehicle with least fuel usage and fewer emissions. They are also far more fuel-efficient than purely gas-powered cars, and far more practical for everyday use than purely electric-powered cars. Combining the two sources of power, a vehicle then is created that is relatively non-polluting and will lead to less fuel consumption which means it possesses enough power to have freeway speeds that does not need too much fuel, it is also great for the stop and go driving in traffic laden areas.
The hybrid car was created due to the result of the demand and clamor to clean the environment from pollutions and for the need to rely less on fuel. To be able to recharge, plugging the hybrid into an electric outlet is not necessary. They charge themselves by means of power usually lost during coasting and braking and can also be charged by the car’s gasoline engine. It can offer more benefits than the usual regular gasoline engine type cars. Here is a list of the many advantages hybrid cars offers.

1. Pollution is less promoted
It is a fact that the continuous damage to our ozone layer is due to the greenhouse effect, and one of the factor that contributes to its damage is pollution in the air, in which dangerous chemicals are transferred to the air, like carbon dioxide that are emitted by vehicles. The measure of carbon dioxide emitted by the hybrid vehicle is principally relative to the quantity of fuel it consumes; thus hybrid cars can absolutely be a contributing factor in lessening the advancement of global warming.
With the use of hybrid cars, fewer fuel is consumed because hybrid car do not totally use gas in order to operate, it also makes use of electricity, a power source that doesn’t bring any danger to the environment.

2. More mileage with less fuel consumption
The obvious advantage of hybrid car is that it saves on gas. With the use of hybrid cars, you are able to save gas money because you don’t need to buy gas after every long trip wherein you can go several miles consuming less fuel.

3. Hybrid cars can help lower your taxes
Tax rebates are given to hybrid cars buyers, so if you buy a hybrid car your tax refunds can be withheld from your taxes and will provide you with additional savings.

4. Your money gains more value
A hybrid car can retain a higher resale value. If you ever want to trade or sell a previously owned hybrid car you can be sure that you will get more of what you paid for it.

5. Efficiency and performance are what defines Hybrid Cars
Hybrid cars have smaller engines than the regular gasoline cars since the power is obtained form two sources, so the smaller engines are closer to the normal power necessity of engines that will give an efficient performance.

6. Hybrid car technology
“Hybrid car technology” is the greatest solution to today’s increasing problem in car air pollution
Hybrid cars uses lesser fuel and a groundbreaking technology that may avoid possible damages to the environment caused by the usual cars

Despite of many uses and advantages, there is one thing to be considered regarding the hybrid cars, its actual price in the market is not yet that affordable to a lot of people, but it is an investment that will pay a hundred fold.

Hurricane Preparedness

There is nothing anyone can do when nature decides to leash out its fury. There is no way to stop it so people should brace for the worse and seek shelter.

In order to minimize the loss of life, most towns and cities have created emergency plans. Sirens are placed in strategic locations to announce a major evacuation; the emergency broadcast system is in place in the event that power and electricity has been cut off as well as stockpiles of food, water and medicine.

Those who live in the coastal communities will usually be battered by hurricanes. This happens between the months of June until November in the Atlantic and from May to November in the northern Pacific Ocean.

When this is first spotted on radar, the forecaster will already inform the public about it. There is no need yet to panic here since the weather conditions may change in the next few hours but if there are no improvements, it is time to activate emergency procedures.

The hurricane may pack winds exceeding more than a 100 miles per hour that can make cars, pieces of metal or wood cause severe damage to the home. Households can board up the windows and doors of the house with hurricane shutters and plywood.

People will rush to the supermarket to stock up on food, water and other essentials. These include candles, batteries for the radio and the flashlight as well as fuel for the generator. All of these things are necessary especially water to prevent dehydration so every possible container must be used including the bathtub.

The most important which must never be forgotten is a medical kit. This should have bandages and some antibiotics to be able to treat anyone who is ill or injured until the person can be brought out to a medical facility for better treatment.

Should the incoming hurricane be classified as a category 4 or 5, residents are advised to evacuate and seek higher ground. It will be a good idea to travel light so only a few pieces of clothing, food and water must be brought into the vehicle. The citizens are also advised to drive slowly and avoid panicking since this could cause accidents on the road.

The hurricane will pass within a few hours. This is the only time that people will be able to go out or return to see how much damage was done. It is only after assessing the damage that towns and cities can say whether the emergency preparedness procedures that were sent in place were effective or not. One indication that it works is if no casualties are reported.  This is because a house or even a building can be repaired but the life of an individual can never be replaced.

The people who live in the household can rehearse the emergency preparedness plan to see if some improvements need to be made. This is because time is off the essence in order to be safe in this type of crisis.

Emergency preparedness is key to ensure the survival of everyone present. People who live through this annually know what to do but those who are moving into the community should learn fast to be able to survive the onslaught of the hurricane.

Do $ Dictate How Green U R ?

Do dollars dictate how “green” a person or family is? To start off this blog, I am saying NO right off the bat. I do know that it takes alot of money for a family to get and install solar panels or a windmill. It also takes alot of money to get an electric car or hybrid car.

But being a person that was hit hard by the recession with loosing a job and being unemployed for almost 2 1/2 years, we as as a family, always tried our hardest to be green.

We planted our own garden and grew alot of the vegetables we purchased at the grocery store. Not to mention, all of our garden was organic with no pesticides that the stores use or sell.

We have cut out the dryer. Which is a big electric waster. Using a line to dry our clothes saves the energy but also lets our clothes last longer without the wear and tear from the dryer.

We no longer use our dishwasher. We bought a bamboo dish dryer that is utilized almost 24/7. Along with that, we cut the use of paper plates and use our regular dishes. And also cut out using paper towels and/or napkins at the dinner table. We now use cloth napkins which has saved us alot more money than the average person would think. Have you ever sat down and really thought about how many paper towels a family uses in 1 month? We have cut this expense out.

At WalMart, we bought a blue trash can that we keep in the kitchen and recycle almost all plastic, paper, cardboard, glass and most styrofoam. As we recycle, we use the “Triangle System” for the plastics and styrofoam.

To keep our old truck out of the landfill, we sold it to a junkyard to recycle all the metal and usable parts.

Clothes was a big thing to us so we frequented all the Goodwill’s and thrift stores. I have always been told that “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”. This is so true when you buy from thrift stores. Why pay $30 – $40 dollars for a pair of Docker’s at the superstore when you can get almost new ones for less than $5 at Goodwill.

And you can make your own house cleaners for almost nothing. You save the environment from all those harsh chemical and save on your wallet. It is a win – win situation.

All I am saying, is that money does not DICTATE how green me or my family can be. I am a “Moniless Greenie” and proud of it.

Living Green Saves The Planet

Green living makes us to live healthy. It saves money and also environment. It is essential to live Green in order to save the earth from global warming. It is our responsibility to save our earth and it is in our hands to save the earth. But we don’t know what are the ideas are to follow for green living. There are some ideas to follow for living green.

The main idea for living green is to reduce the dust that we discard from our home. Now, so many companies are also taking many steps for reducing their garbage. This is a good idea to follow for living green. The other idea we have to follow is re-use durable containers and products. It is a good way to use these products. If we are not having any necessary with those products at least we have to give to the others who are in need of it. Recycle is also one of the best ideas for living green.
Loving the planet is one of the major ideas for living green. Using organic products and cosmetics is also a major idea to lead a life green. Use hormone free dairy products and try to buy these products in glass bottles because, these are reusable. Try to grow a plants or trees which give more oxygen. Avoid the plastic covers because these are not reusable. And these take 1000 years to dissolve in earth.

There are also some easy ways to live green. Easy green living is nothing but living green without making much effort. There are some easy ways or ideas to live green. Make a small difference to live green. Water conservation is one of the easy ways to live green. It is an important resource because we can’t live with out it. Water conservation also saves money. But we generally waste so much water in so many ways. Try to reduce using water level makes the life green. The simple ways to conserve water are using low flowed shower heads, using less water when washing clothes or dishes, see there is no leakage in taps and try to use sprinklers for the land. These are some of the ways to conserve water.

Another way of living green is eating local food. The farmer market is a best one to get a local food. It not only gives energy but also saves money. The food that is obtained from a farmer market is cultivated by hand not by using fuel. And try to grow the vegetables and leafy vegetables in house. Because farmers may use the pesticides but we never use this in our home. We use water to cultivate the plants which is one of the green substances.

Coming to another way of living green that is recycling. Recycling is being done from several numbers of years. Now there are so many recycling centers to drop our goods in it. We may not use the goods so we can give the at least for the people who are in need of it.

It is our responsibility to live green and make the globe green.
